/Basic Info\
Name: Anteishita, Kanagu
Age: 35
Alias: The Engineer
Nation: Fire Nation
Occupation: Head Engineer for the Bunkaku, Second in Command of the Bunkaku, Former Head Engineer of the Fire Nation Army
Political Standpoint/Allegiance: Bunkaku, Fire Nation supremacist, anti-royal family
Appearance:
Kanagu's hair is short and choppy, which is to be expected considering she cuts it herself. Her amber colored eyes, common for firebenders, are almost always slightly exasperated and resigned, mostly due to Ren. Kangu's skin is pale, due to spending most of her time inside, working. She wears a pair of goggles on her head (she switches between several types) at all times, to protect both against the sparks of her welding, where applicable, and the glares of firebending (again, mostly Ren). She wears a orange tang top under a deep red sleeveless shirt. A pale yellow obi pays homage to her Fire Nation roots. A pair of odd gloves end before her fingers, and are the same orange as her undershirt, with the red of her shirt on the edges. Her pants are a grayish yellow, and boots are black.
/Combat Structure\
Bending: Fire Bender, Advanced
Weapons: A Jack-Of-All-Trades with bladed weaponry of all nations, but prefers straight firebending
Combat Style: Kanagu treats her firebending the way she treats welding- fire is a constant, steady stream that is applied where it'll be most effective. Despite her small stature, she specializes in hand to hand, using her fire almost like a knife to attack. That's not to say that she's not a powerful bending. When pissed off- and let it be known now that getting her well and truly angry is a terribly hard task- she really gets going. Waves of fire, specially designed to be incredibly hot, will crash down on enemies with crippling force. She's also capable of blue fire, and able to switch out between the two with ease. Lightning is also something Kanagu is able to produce, but she prefers to stick with basic bending. She finds it uncontrollable, and she has quite enough of that in her life, thank you very much. However, she's not above sending tiny jolts of lightning at nerves or joints when she wants someone down.
/Biography\
Personality: At first glance Kanagu almost seems like a secretary. Doing what's needed, including the paperwork and assorted chores that go with leading an organization, as well as taking Ren's...shall we say eccentric-ness with considerable aplomb. Nothing really seems to phase her, though Kanagu's normally rather exasperated. Seeing her with a clipboard (for scribbling down ideas, and for marking down anything that needs to be done), tagging along with Ren to talk with others is a common sight.
But, Kanagu is far more clever than most would give her credit for. Her mind picks up where other people are at light speed, often cutting them off before they can do something stupid. She's always watching the world, noticing what's off about it and doing everything she can to fix it- in whatever way is needed. That's what she sees the Bunkaku as- a way of fixing the Fire Nation. Kanagu is a woman who has no problem getting her hands dirty to solve a problem, whether that filth is grease or blood.
Underneath even that is her inner scientist. The part of her that's always chugging out new ideas, constantly going towards some unknown goal. Kanagu is often woken up in the middle of the night by some new idea, and thus always keeps a notebook on hand for scribbling new schematics or just general thoughts. It's because of this part that she's so brilliant at making new designs for machines. It's actually rather distracting.
History: It seemed that Azusa Anteishita could not have children. After two different miscarriages, and five years, it seems that she and her husband Kaijin would remain without the son they had so dreamed of. Azusa was again pregnant- almost, almost at nine months, but she was now dreadfully ill. Kaijin did all he could, but kept getting pulled away at odd times for his job- as a guard of the city gates. Their neighbors also tried to help, but little they did had positive results. And, as the sickness continued, hope for a successful pregnancy diminished.
Until Azusa went into labor.
Illness complicated the pregnancy, and caused the woman to go into pregnancy half a month early. Kaijin, thankfully home, rushed his wife to the midwife. Despite all difficulties, the birthing went fine. The result- a baby girl.
Azusa was thrilled at their child, though little Kanagu was rather sickly and small. Kaijin, however, was less pleased. He had his heart set on a boy. However, no other attempts at pregnancy stuck, and so he was stuck with the fragile female.
Kanagu was fascinated by fire even as a young child, and would often toddle away from her parents to watch fire dance shows or just towards anyone who happened to be bending at the time. Because of this, the girl would often end up at the blacksmith's, watching as the apprentices and master made beautiful shiny things (after all, that's all they were to her at the time) with the pretty, pretty fire. Eventually it got to the point that if Kanagu disappeared, her mother would just show up at the 'smiths, without the need to check anywhere else.
Because of the birthing complications, Kanagu would often get sick, and thus was not able to go to a typical school. Instead her mother, a scholar by nature if not profession, taught her daughter all she could, using books from the local libraries and speaking with a neighbor who happened to teach at the academy close by. Information was picked up like a sponge to the girl, especially the sciences. Even complicated math equations were breezed through, the periodic table long since memorized, the girl was plenty enough to be considered a prodigy of academics by the age of ten. However, without a certified teacher to back her, or a stellar financial situation, higher learning seemed a distant idea, especially at such a young age. It didn't help that her Father never spoke of her accomplishments, instead looking down on her, both for her gender, at the fact that it seemed that Kanagu could not bend.
So, in her downtime, Kanagu continued to visit the blacksmith, making friends with the apprentices and learning the tricks of the trade. The master of the 'smith, one Kenshi Kanadzuchi (unbeknownst to Kanagu, a former General in the Fire Nation Army), grew very fond of her, and would let the girl help out around the building. One day, while trying and failing to get a piece of metal the right temperature, frustration and purpose formed to necessary spark to create fire within the girl. The flame she produced was small and very concentrated, working rather like a modern blowtorch. Very controlled for even a normal bending, much less an accidental flare caused by frustration.
Kanagu was thrilled. She didn't care for her Father's approval- the man was a vague figure in her life, little more to her than the man her mother liked. Instead she saw this as an opportunity to surprise her mother. Perhaps, with the control this would eventually allow her, she could do some really spectacular metalwork, and give that to her mother for her birthday (in a few months time). Kenshi saw the girl's talent, and pounced.
The former General began training the girl in all her spare time, not telling the girl how talented she was. Instead, he made her progress seem iffy at best, forcing her to better and better herself, always remaining somewhat aloof. He trained her in fighting techniques, saying that the added martial arts would help create self discipline, and a number of other half truths. Kanagu pushed herself furiously, wanting her control and bending to be perfect.
When Azusa's birthday came around, the family was together to celebrate. And Kanagu presented her gift- a small, tank-like machine that appeared delicate and beautiful, but was actually tough as nails. Then, Kanagu used bending to spark a contraption on the inside, which ignited gunpowder. This started a tiny engine on the inside. The tank began to move across the table.
Both parents were thrilled, and Kanagu quickly found herself explaining how the mini-tank worked, as at that point it was a completely original idea. Kanagu had little explanation for how she came up with the idea- only that she had been sleeping when the idea hit her, and she had woken up at 2 AM with it, staying up the rest of the night to sketch out the design.
A week later, Kenshi came buy the Anteishita household, with a current General of the Army in tow- a friend of his. On command, Kanagu showed the man her contraption. Within another week, Kanagu was giving her mother a fond goodbye, and her father a courteous but curt one, as she headed out for the main army training facility. There, she continued her firebending training- and was shocked to find out just how far ahead she was from others, even ones who had started far before her. However, the physical aspect of the training was not really her cup of tea, per say, and instead she spent most of her time making schematics, and practicing her metal work, rarely getting a good nights sleep from being woken up with new ideas.
After two years of this, Kanagu was working on a new design. This particular machines' parts were rather thin, and so firebending for power was no feasible, nor any sort of explosion. Despite all her hard work, it seemed that she had nothing that could power it. Finally, in a burst of uncharacteristic rage, though tightly reigned and controlled, Kanagu slammed her hand against the device, meaning to push it away in frustration. Instead, the machine sparked and came to life, and the smell of ozone assaulted her nose. Incredulous, the girl, now twenty one, stared blankly at her hand, which was still lightly sparking. Equally surprised, a nearby officer stared at her in the same manner.
A month later Kanagu as whisked out of the training facility, and brought to one of the main science centers of the Fire Nation. There she began to work full time, designing and helping create machines- including the tank that had started the revolution of her life. At the same time, she began training with lightning, as well as mastering blue fire. She grew ranks quickly for her ingenuity, her cool headedness, and her organization. By age 27 she was head technical advisor to King Ozai, and by 28 she was strong in both areas she had been training.
But, working under Ozai was not all it seemed, and Kanagu was a silent observer to the insanity of the princess, the pointless cruelty of the King, and the horror occurring to the easily manipulated Prince. Quickly growing disillusioned, the girl continued her work, but for the first time considering leaving the army. And, at 29, she did. Her hair, then long and silky, tied up in the traditional top knot, was cut to a severe short length in rebellion, and the girl began traveling, looking for new ideas for machines. She continued this way for a few years, and didn't come back despite hearing that Prince Zuko was now Fire Lord Zuko (still seeing him as the weak willed pansy that he was in her mind's eye). It was then that she meet Ren.
This crazy, but oddly brilliant man presented her with all the opportunity she needed to see the country she loved reach it's former status, as well as the exercise her great love. And she grabbed it with both hands. The Bunkaku mixed exactly with what she wanted, and her brilliance once again meant that she skyrocketed the ranks, eventually landing as the second in command (which only strengthened her opinion of Ren- crazy, but brilliant). Now, this brilliant and deadly woman will do anything to use her talents to take out those who dare get in the way of the Fire Nation ambition.
