Nestled within the subzero terratin of the North Pole, the Northern Water Tribe is an incredible contrast to the much smaller collective of the Southern Water Tribe. Thanks to the rugged & treacherous landscape and strength of the tribe's many warriors & waterbenders, the Northern Water Tribe has been able to survive a century of war.
The actual city is built from thick walls of ice and the extremely well-planned water streets are very similar to the Italian city of Venice. A thriving economy, deeply rooted culture, and social hierarchy is well organized and in place- and there seems to be plenty of food and resources.
Some of their traditions include that women aren't allowed to learn waterbending, and they probably aren't allowed to fight in the war either. However, women in the tribe who can waterbend are sent to Yugota to learn how to use their gift for healing. Another tradition is the engagement necklace - instead of a ring, a man will carve something into a blue pendant that will be worn by his betrothed. There are also arranged marriages.
