/Basic Info\
Name: Aylen
Age: 16
Alias: None
Nation: Water Tribe
Occupation: None that ever stick. She travels constantly, but to make some money she often holds lots of odd jobs or whatever work she can find.
Political Standpoint/Allegience: Aylen is on the side of peace, she dislikes war greatly but isn’t very much of a political person passed that.
Apperance:
Aylen

Her hair is a dark brown, almost black in color. It is worn in a strange pony-tail/bun like structure that makes a loop by the side of her head. In addition she has three stray tendrils of hair that dangle to just about shoulder length. Her eyes are blue, typical of all people born of Water Tribe blood. She has a slim figured, but has a decent muscle tone.
Her garb changes with the seasons, or in some cases where she is planning on traveling. However, it usually involves adding or removing articles of clothing. Winter and fall calls for a shorter blue tunic lined with a bit of fur, with a long sleeve garment underneath, as well as gloves and thicker pants with warm boots. For the summer and spring she dresses lighter, wearing a navy tunic with bandages and fingerless gloves, as well as pants made of a lighter material, comfy shoes, and an armband with a native pattern.
This apparel didn’t always work during the war. It was hard to go to Fire Nation Islands while wearing Water Tribe gear. So she wore a black Chinese style top with grey pants and a red and yellow sash to top it off. Her Earth Kingdom wear is much more simple. Consisting of a ragged green top with a darker green pair of pants. In a few cases she has snuck into parties for those of higher status, for those she has worn a typical dress with multiple layers with a floral pattern on the sleeves, and to her dismay she had to wear makeup and put her hair up differently. When at the beach she just wears her under top, which is sleeveless, and a pair of old, tattered, light weight pants that only make it up to her knees.
/Combat Structure\
Bending: Knows very little waterbending, but can heal.
Weapons: A small, whale bone knife
Combat Style: Aylen knows very little actual waterbending. She has never had any formal training except in healing. The girl is a talented healer and has basically mastered the art since it was all she was able to learn as a girl. The waterbending she does know is what she has pieced together from small scrolls she has, watching other benders, or the occasionally short lesson she may just be able to find. In saying this, any waterbending Aylen performs is lacking form and doesn’t look professional to say the least. She has somewhat taught herself to make up for it, and her style of bending is well…different from most Water Tribe members. It’s a bit flashier and unpredictable because, even Aylen doesn’t know what she’s doing half the time.
/Biography\
Personality: Aylen is a live for the moment type of girl. She loves new things and enjoys a good competition or two, no matter what it is. She’s a thrill seeker and dreams of traveling the whole world. She’s quick to make friends and is a very friendly and fun person. She may seem a tad strange but Aylen hasn’t really stopped to notice she might have said something odd. Aylen is always out to try different things and will probably eat anything edible set in front of her. Despite it all, Aylen can appreciate time to calm down and just chill and enjoy the surroundings. Just because she’s always on the go doesn’t mean she just wants it all to fly past her, she wants to take in every sight and appreciate it. Typically Aylen has a tendency to get in trouble, mainly when she says something she shouldn’t have. She rarely gets in trouble for things in which she could get caught. She’s got street smarts; after all she’s been around the block and knows how to handle certain types of people. This trait isn’t always helpful, but it serves its purpose when the time comes.
History: Aylen’s story starts about nineteen years ago. Her mother, Nayeli was born to the Northern Water tribe and was now about twenty-three years of age. She had decided it was time to take a trip of her own, and decided to hit a beach off an Earth Kingdom peninsula with a few friends. Nayeli was a gifted healer; of course she had not learned any fighting tricks and the thought never entered her mind. What she hadn’t expected to find was a young man by the name of Tane, who originally hailed from the Southern Water Tribes, but lived wherever he traveled because he felt the snow and ice of the Pole was too confining. Nayeli fell in love with this man, and as all friends do they urged her to talk to this man. Nayeli didn’t want to, she kept denying to her friends that she liked him and eventually they left her alone.
The time came for a huge surf competition, and both Nayeli and Tane were entering. The goal was to catch and ride the biggest wave possible without wiping out. After hours of some surfing, it came down to the final two competitors, Nayeli and Tane. The final wave of the competition rose, whoever could ride it would win. Tane and Nayeli both took off on it, both being headstrong and competitive, neither one wanted to lose. Tane made the mistake to look over his shoulder to look at Nayeli, and was suddenly knocked off his board, and was sent tumbling into a rocky field.
The next thing Tane could see was Nayeli looking down at him, with a worried look in her eye. His back was sore and it took him a second to remember where he was and what had happened. He muttered the words, “D-did I win?” He asked with a bit of a laugh. Nayeli laughed, “No one did!” Later Tane learned that when he had gone under, Nayeli jumped off her board (thus being disqualified) and dragged him to shore and treated his wounds. Tane thanked Nayeli and offered to buy her something. Nayeli only laughed, “What could I possibly need off this little Island? A thank you and you’re name are all I need!” she said grinning widely. Shortly after Tane started going out with Nayeli and a year later they married.
Tane and Nayeli traveled several places together, but Nayeli soon got homesick and wanted to go back to the North Pole. Tane agreed, and traveled back to the Tribe with Nayeli. The happiness didn’t last long when he learned the Tribes customs about waterbending. Being a Southerner he didn’t understand why women couldn’t waterbend. In the South Pole they did. Nayeli told him not to make a big deal out of it. However, fate has a sense of humor, after a three years of marriage they had their first child. It was a girl, and a waterbender. They named her Aylen.
Tane wanted the girl to grow up with all the skills of any waterbender, and to not be just a healer. By this time Nayeli was starting to feel that she wanted to learn fighting moves too. She had her first offspring and if Tane were ever in battle she would have to protect Aylen by herself, so Nayeli agreed to leave for the South Pole.
They were settling into the South Pole just fine, Aylen was nearly a year old by this time, she wouldn’t learn anything until she was at least eight. The members of the South Pole were warm and welcoming. Nayeli began to learn waterbending tricks with the other benders in the South Pole, with Tane there to guide her, since he was a more experienced waterbender. Tragedy struck the South Poles when Aylen was only two years of age. Fire Nation raids were getting closer and closer to the Pole, and eventually they landed on the shore of the South Pole. The Fire Nation killed and captured several waterbenders until they were driven out. This persisted over a year. Aylen was now three, and Tane and Nayeli were two of the depleting number of benders. Nayeli began to worry that Aylen would be taken, or both of them would be killed and Aylen would be orphaned. The parents decided it would be best to return to the Northern Water Tribe to protect Aylen.
The three set out to sea on a small boat. On the way to the North Pole they saw a fleet of Fire Navy ships, Tane tried to steer away and hide the boat amongst the ice caps. He told Nayeli to take Aylen below deck and hide with her. The Navy spotted their little ship and invaded. Tane quickly ran to his wife and daughter and told them get into the lifeboat. He told them he’d come after them, even though inside both adults knew he wouldn’t come back. Tane was taken captive for being a waterbender and was brought to a Fire Nation prison. It was a long and difficult journey home for Nayeli and Aylen. Nayeli had just lost the love of her life and was alone; she had miles and miles of ocean to travel while she still had to care for her young daughter. Luckily, Northern Water Tribe warriors out at sea found them when the two were close to the Pole.
Nayeli feared she would never see her husband again, and Aylen would often ask when Daddy would come home. Aylen started to learn healing at age seven, a year earlier than most girls start, because Nayeli wanted to take her mind off her missing father. When Aylen was eight, something wonderful happened. Her father returned home along with several other waterbenders and Tribe warriors. Tane explained while in prison he met other Water Nation men and they planned and escape to go home. It was a low-end prison and fairly new so the guards were inexperienced. The men overtook them easily and escaped on a small ship. Years later, Nayeli became pregnant again and had a boy, he was a bender, his name was Hei. Later her second son was born, also a bender, his name was Noe. Aylen was now twelve and had mastered the art of healing. She was also beginning to make a name for herself in the Tribe as the center of all trouble. She was just as fun loving and rebellious as her mother and father, and dragged herself and other kids into trouble. All the villagers were dumbfounded as to how this girl even had the patience or attention span to master healing.
To keep her occupied, her mother and father began to teach her some waterbending when she turned thirteen. Also in the meantime her father showed her how to craft a knife from animal bones. Aylen didn’t show too much interest in learning to fight, she was always off elsewhere exploring. But when her father could get her to sit still for a while he’d take her out at night where no one would see and train her.
Sadly, secrets can’t be kept forever. A neighbor saw this nighttime lesson, and being and overprotective and over reactive mother she reported the incident. Tane, Nayeli, and Aylen stood before the Council, they pleaded that it was unfair to excluded women from fighting and that if a boy wanted to learn healing they wouldn’t be opposed to it, so why be so opposed to a woman fighter? That argument got them nowhere, and Tane swore it had been only one short lesson and he would teach her no more. Unfortunately, the Council didn’t buy it, they knew Tane had a headstrong nature, and he’d probably resume teaching Aylen as soon as the heat was off. Which he probably would have. The Council knew he had already taught Nayeli to fight, and they wanted to send both of them on a temporary banishment. Aylen thought this was absurd, they had done nothing wrong, sort of, and they had promised to stop, so why was the Council being so harsh?
This was when Aylen stepped in, she asked, more like demanded, that she go in place of her parents, after all her mother had two younger boys she had to look out for now. Of course the Council was shocked at what the girl had to say. Aylen claimed that just because they told her she couldn’t fight didn’t mean she wouldn’t, she’d do it when they all had their backs turned, so they might as well get it over with and get rid of her while they had the early chance. Perhaps Aylen was too enraged to really know what she was saying, or maybe she just wanted to see the pure shock on everyone’s face. The Council took her up on her offer, her parents could stay, but she could not return for one year, and when she returned she was not allowed to waterbend.
Later Aylen would explain to her parents that they had a settled life here, they couldn’t uproot their family and home on banishment, not with a two year old and newborn infant. Aylen said it was time for her to see what the world had to offer, and perhaps she could find someone who would be open to teaching her waterbending. Her mother and father would miss her, and they asked her to visit when the ban lifted. Aylen promised.
A year passed, and Aylen was fifteen. She had been to all sorts of places in the Earth Kingdom, the world and its customs fascinated Aylen, she had seen Kyoshi Island, and watched earthbending tournaments of all kinds. She even saw the Blind Bandit claim another championship title in an underground tournament, and traveled for a while with a band of singing nomads. She had sampled food from all over and competed in a number of contests herself.
Aylen felt it was time to return home and see her family again. The ban had lifted and she had no problem getting into the North Pole. Her family was ecstatic to see her again, and wanted to hear all the stories she had to offer. Her brothers enjoyed the tales of the myths and crazy stories that came with Earth Kingdom culture, which sometimes included powerful earthbenders who saved entire villages. Even if they weren’t true the boys were riveted to them.
It was good to have a home cooked meal for once, and to see her parents encouraging smiles telling her to see as much of the world as she could and visit them when she could. Her visit ended with a good nights sleep, breakfast, good-bye hugs, and her family watching her sail across the horizon. The last bit of advice her parents gave her was a good place she should visit next, a peninsula off of the Earth Kingdom.
It wouldn’t be months later until the Avatar would make his appearance in the North Pole, bringing with him Katara who would go as far as to challenge Master Pakku to get him to let women learn waterbending. Aylen wasn’t there, and wouldn’t find out women were no longer forbidden to waterbend, until she visited again which has yet to happen. Aylen was happy out there in the world to, and didn’t find out about the Fire Nation attack on the Pole until months after it. She took her parents advice and visited the peninsula. Aylen wanted a nice a beach trip. She met an elderly couple there that thought she looked familiar. Confused, she told them she was from the Northern Water Tribe. They asked who her parents were and she told them, Tane and Nayeli. The couple knew them; they had been at the contest where Tane and Nayeli met. They told her the story, and Aylen laughed, “Yup, that sounds like them alright.” The couple offered Aylen a place to stay until she left, she accepted.
When the news came of the siege on the Pole, Alyen worried if her parents and brothers were okay. She was too far away to make a journey all the way back to the North Pole, so she went to a message center and asked if she could get in delivered. They picked out a fast bird, and Aylen gave it her message and had it take it to the North Pole. The message read:
Mom and Dad,
I learned about the attacks, is everyone okay? I wish I had been there! I’d have shown those firebenders a thing or two of what I’ve learned! Did I tell you I bought a waterbending scroll? It cost almost all of what I had at the time, but it was worth it! It is difficult to follow without a teacher, but it is better than nothing. I wanted to come visit, but it would have taken too long, a message seems faster. I’ll be sixteen soon, I’ve made lots of friends, and have been traveling with a few of them. We’re by a beach right now, we’re going to have a party there for my birthday. I wish you guys could be here. I’ve found some cool gifts for Hei and Noe, I’ll give them to them next time I visit. Tell them I miss them! My friends say hi! Hope to visit soon.
Aylen
A typical letter to parents. The reply came weeks later:
Aylen,
The siege has been over a while now, your father was injured but alive, and Hei and Noe are fine as well as myself. It was a great honor to meet the Avatar, his friend Katara turned out to be the granddaughter of the woman Master Pakku was supposed to marry years ago! She had challenged him to teach her to waterbend, and I think if you return soon you might be able to get some formal lessons. I hope you have a good time with your friends on your birthday, you’re getting so old now! That makes us old too I assume… Hei and Noe miss you, the whole Tribe knows of your stories by now because of them, they tell them to just about everyone they meet. Hei just turned four. We can’t wait to hear more of your stories, maybe next time you visit your friends can come along, they are always welcome.
Nayeli, Tane, Hei and Noe
Now sixteen, Aylen is still traveling the world, she has many memorable visits to several places. Who knows, maybe one day Aylen will learn real waterbending, or maybe she’ll just stick with what she has for now, it seems more fun for her this way.
