The great, walled city now works as the home for thousands of refugees, all whom work to remake their lives before they were touched by the war. Libraries, shops, merchants, you can find at least one of everything in Ba Sing Sei. One famous example is a tea shop that resides in the lower areas, run by the Iroh- the uncle of the Fire Lord. He is hailed for having the best drinks in all the world. It's also not uncommon to see the Fire Lord, the Avatar, and their friends all visiting, or even working at the shop.
The Earth King and his bear Bosco live here as well, now having lost a lot of their naievity, working together with the other Nations to solve problems, instead of sticking his head in the sand. The higher and lower system still exists, but it seems that the upper classes have learned a lesson in humility by the temporary take over.
Also here is Lake Laogai, a picturesque lake that once housed a treasonous group to brainwash citizens. The Dai Li have since been cleaned up, the area destroyed, and the lake opened for boating and fishing.
